Laptop BIOS configuration

1. Entering the startup menu

Enjoy the Lenovo logo when powering on your new laptop for the first time...

Tip:
Click on the screenshots to see them in full size.

Press Enter to interrupt the normal startup procedure.

The startup menu has a timeout of 15 seconds and will automatically start the default boot option (typically the preinstalled Windows system).

Optional:
Press Enter to pause the startup menu.


2. Entering the BIOS

At the startup menu press F1 to enter the BIOS.

Conditional:
Depending on the factory defaults of your laptop you may be asked for the BIOS password.

Usually the default BIOS password is 123456.

In rare cases the password is set to 0000 or 000000.

Optional:
Use the Show Password toggle to verify that you've correctly typed in the password.

If you've done everything correctly so far, the BIOS is loading...


3. Loading BIOS default settings

Once the BIOS is loading...

...the Main screen of the BIOS shows various system information.

Press to go to the Restart screen.

Press until you reach Load Setup Defaults and press Enter to select it.

Press Enter again to confirm loading setup defaults.

Rational:
Loading the default options will revert (almost) all options to a know good state.
Subsequently only a few changes need to be done and are documented below.

Press to return to the Main screen.

Press to go to the Config screen.


4. Configuring network items

Press Enter to enter Network configuration.

Press until you reach Lenovo Cloud Services.

Press Enter to configure.

Press to select Disabled.

Press Enter to confirm disabling.

Rational:
For privacy and security reasons we do not recommend to boot untrusted ressources from the Internet.

Press Esc to return to the Config screen.

Press until you reach USB.


5. Configuring USB items

Press Enter to enter USB configuration.

Press until you reach Charge in Battery Mode.

Press Enter to configure.

Press to select Enabled.

Press Enter to confirm enabling.

Rational:
Enabling this allows your laptop to act as a powerbank by continueing to charge e.g. mobile phones when the laptop is powered off.

Press Esc to return to the Config screen.

Press until you reach Keyboard/Mouse.


6. Configuring keyboard/mouse items

Press Enter to enter Keyboard/Mouse configuration.

Press until you reach Fn and Ctrl Key swap.

Press Enter to configure.

Press to select Enabled.

Press Enter to confirm enabling.

Rational:
Swapping Fn and Ctrl Keys increases space between Ctrl and Alt for improved ergonomics.

Press until you reach F1-F12 as Primary Function.

Press Enter to configure.

Press to select Enabled.

Press Enter to confirm enabling.

Rational:
Leaving this disabled would require to always press Fn for F keys which is ergonomically bad.

Press Esc to return to the Config screen.

Press until you reach Power.


7. Configuring power items

Press Enter to enter Power configuration.

Press until you reach Sleep State.

Note: this might not be available on all models.

Press Enter to configure.

Press to select Linux.

Press Enter to confirm your selection.

Rational:
Setting this to Linux increases battery runtime.

Press Esc to return to the Config screen.

Press until you reach Beep and Alarm.
